What is a Registered Behavioral Technician?

Behavioral technicians, also known as registered behavioral technicians (RBTs), are healthcare professionals who work closely with patients and clients. They provide support and assistance to individuals in need. The work is challenging yet rewarding and requires a lot of dedication and patience. What does a Registered Behavioral Technician do?

As a behavioral technician, your role is varied and important in helping patients achieve their treatment goals. Responsibilities may include monitoring behaviors, implementing behavior plans, providing support and coaching, and analyzing data. Your contribution is valuable in making a difference in the lives of those you serve.

Responsibilities may include:

• Monitoring and sharing client progress with family members and caretakers.
• Assisting families to help the client achieve milestones.
• Conducting behavioral or other psychiatric assessments.
• Working with patients and clients to develop their physical and emotional skills.
• Observing and documenting behavior data, including improvements and regressions.
• Assisting patients with daily living skills.
• Helping behavioral analysts prepare client materials.
• Traveling to individual homes and facilities as needed.

The analyst and technician visit patients’ homes to give speech and motor function tests. If the tests show that the patient needs treatment, the technician creates a plan to help the patient improve their speech or sound production by strengthening the necessary muscles. The technician records the patient’s progress each week and tells the analyst. The analyst then works with the patient’s family to keep them updated on the patient’s progress and treatment plan.

What are the possible career paths of a Registered Behavioral Technician?

The demand for trained RBTs has seen a marked increase over the last several years and the need continues to increase each year.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for positions similar to RBTS (psychiatric technicians and aides) is expected to grow 9% between 2021 and 2031.

Course Eligibility Requirements:

In order for you to obtain the Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) credential through the Behavioral Analysis Certification Board (BACB) you must meet the following requirements:

• Be at least 18 years of age; and
• Have a high school diploma or equivalent; and
• Successfully pass a Level II Criminal Background Check to be completed within 180 days of the Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT) application.

• 40 Hour Video-Based Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Training designed to meet and exceed the certification criteria set forth by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). We are committed to delivering an educational experience that not only educates but also instills confidence. Participants must pass with a 90% or above on the final exam, to receive a certificate for eligibility to be assessed.
• Competency Assessment & Supervision – Southern Technical Institute will coordinate with a Board-Certified Behavioral Analysis (BCBA) to complete a one-on-one competency assessment. A successful competency assessment is a pre-requisite to take board certification exam.
